Report – AFC Wimbledon 1 Walsall 0 – Dons return to League One
AFC Wimbledon earned promotion to League One with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Walsall in the League Two Play-Off Final, thanks to a first-half stoppage-time strike from Myles Hippolyte.
The win marks a significant milestone for the Dons, who will now play in a division above rivals MK Dons for the first time in their history.
In front of a raucous crowd at Wembley, the match unfolded much as expected — tight, tense, and cagey — with both sides wary of making a costly error. Wimbledon, who boasted the best defensive record in League Two, having conceded just 35 goals during the regular season and none in the play-offs, looked composed throughout and deserved the victory.
Chances were few and far between early on. Wimbledon enjoyed more of the ball and appeared the more progressive side, while Walsall looked nervy and struggled to string meaningful passages of play together.
The Dons’ first real opportunity came in the 22nd minute when Hippolyte had a shot blocked following a cross from Alastair Smith. Smith then tried his luck three minutes later but fired over the bar. The first shot on target came just past the half-hour mark as Marcus Browne tested Walsall goalkeeper Tommy Simkin, who was equal to the effort.
Wimbledon continued to press and nearly found the opener when Smith was picked out smartly by top scorer Matty Stevens, only to be denied by another solid defensive block.
The breakthrough finally arrived in first-half stoppage time. A poorly cleared Wimbledon corner eventually fell to Hippolyte, who struck a crisp low drive into the bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations among the travelling Dons supporters.
Walsall responded with more urgency in the second half and came closest to equalising just five minutes after the restart. Jamille Matt’s effort had beaten keeper Owen Goodman, but Riley Harbottle was on hand to make a stunning goal-line clearance to preserve the lead.
As the clock ticked down, Walsall struggled to create clear chances. Their final opportunity came in the 85th minute when David Okagbue blazed over the bar from a promising position.
Wimbledon remained resolute, managing the final minutes expertly, including six minutes of stoppage time, to seal a famous win and promotion back to League One at the third time of asking.
