Report: Peterborough United 2 Charlton Athletic 1 – Posh come from behind to beat Addicks
- Peterborough 2-1 Charlton
- Sammie Szmodics double seals comeback win for Posh
- Josh Windass had given Charlton the lead from the spot.
Charlton lost ground in the League One promotion race after seeing a 1-0 lead turn into a 2-1 defeat against Peterborough at The Weston Homes Stadium.
Lee Bowyer made four changes to the side that beat Bristol Rovers at the weekend. Captain Jason Pearce returned alongside Darren Pratley, Paul Smyth and Omar Bogle.
Charlton went close early on, Ian Maasten’s powerful drive did not trouble Posh keeper Christy Pym.
The Addicks were rewarded for their early pressure in the 13th minute when they were awarded a penalty. The returning Pearce was fouled while trying to get to Jake Forster-Caskey’s cross. Connor Washington stood up and confidently put the penalty away.
Posh did have an opportunity before the break, but Jack Taylor’s effort was easy for Ben Amos.
The visitors should have gone 2-0 up in the 66th minute. Omar Bogle headed down for Chris Gunter but he headed over the bar.
The Addicks were made to pay for that as just moments later a mix up between Pearce and Deji Oshilaja allowed Sammie Szmodics to slot past Amos and level the scores.
It was Szmodics who then found the winner thirteen minutes later. He was slid in behind the visitors defence and finished past Amos.
Amos did deny Szmodics a hat-rick late on as Posh moved three points clear of their visitors in the League One table.
